The findings also suggested that lack of access to finance, international competition and cheap imports, a problematic business environment, unreliable power supply and poor infrastructure are major factors affecting the performance of wood furniture enterprises in Tanzania.

Answer:

Lots of good answers below, and perhaps we're all talking about different aspects of a complicated question. Still, I thought I'd answer the question a different way:

1. Lack of talent.

2. Lack of skill.

Many entrepreneurs lack the necessary talent to be successful. They lack key talents, and don't fulfil them in the team around them. A talented group can create success in the face of setbacks. A group that lacks sufficient talent will often create setbacks in the face of success. All other things being equal, the most important question a CEO asks is usually not "what (will we do)?", but "whom (will we have on our team)?" To paraphrase Tim Notke: hard work can sometimes best talent, but talent and hard work always beats hard work.

Skill is developed through experience, and experience is often acquired through failure. It is hard to fail gracefully as an entrepreneur, and relatively easy to fail in a way that makes it very hard to try again. In that way the deck is often stacked against you.

Find a mentor, earn some scars, and be honest with yourself about where your talents lie.
