★ True delta formation needs many favourable conditions as mentioned below:
- The flow of River must be low and steady enough for silt to be deposited at the mouth. Eg: The Ok Tedi river(Papua New Guinea) is one of the fastest flowing rivers in the world. It’s doesn't from delta as It becomes tributary of Fly river which creates a delta.
- Deposition of sediments must be high near the mouth.
- The river must be flow with a large load of sediments during the course. Himalayan rivers are a perfect example of it, because of the sedimentary origin of the mountain.
- Continental Shelf or adjoining sea near the mouth of the river must be wide enough to provide a suitable area for the deposition of silt.
- The great deltas of the world are all formed in relatively protected bodies of water while the Amazon empties directly into the turbulent Atlantic ocean.
- Low wave and current energy in the adjoining body of water. The Atlantic Ocean has sufficient wave and tidal energy to carry most of the Amazon’s sediments.
- No large lakes or Barrages present in the river course. In the long run, they will slow the flow of sediments in the river. Example: Farakka Barrage(Ganges river).
