Laterite is a soil and rock type rich in iron and aluminium, and is commonly considered to have formed in hot and wet tropical areas. Nearly all laterites are of rusty-red coloration, because of high iron oxide content. They develop by intensive and long-lasting weathering of the underlying parent rock.

The most important feature of laterite soil is that is made through the process of leaching due to heavy rain.
Red soil and yellow soil develops on crystalline igneous rocks, and found in the areas of low rainfall. It develops reddish colour because of the presence of diffused iron in crystalline and metamorphic rocks. The yellow colour is formed when it occurs in a hydrated form.
