Modern history is the history of the world beginning after the Middle Ages. Generally the term "modern history" refers to the history of the world since the advent of the Age of Reason and the Age of Enlightenment in the 17th and 18th centuries and the beginning of the Industrial Revolution.

* Administrative records - The British believed in writing every policy , every plan, agreement, decisions which later served as important source.

* The British preserved every letter, and document. The colonial regime had established record rooms attached to all administrative institutions.

* All the documents documents were carefully copied out and beautifully written by calligraphists.

* Surveys - The practise of conducting surveys became very important under colonial administration so as to consolidate its power and to effectively administer the country.

* Important surveys like revenue surveys were conducted. Later, Census was also prepared that helped in collecting information related to castes, religions, occupations
