Features

It depends on what you want to use the meter for. A basic $5 meter will allow you to measure voltage, current and resistance. A top of the line $1000+ Fluke will also include capacitance, frequency, diode/transistor test and a host of other measurements.

Leads/connectors

All multimeters I have owned thus far had similar leads. A “banana” connector on one end that plugs into the meter and a probe with a pointy end on the other end that you touch to the circuit you are testing. The banana plugs are a standard size and I can swap leads between my different meters without any problems. They all fit.

There are multiple connectors on the meter. Usually a “common”. Then one for volt/ohm and a separate for amps. You will need to plug your test leads into the correct connector. I have one meter that will beep if I select amps but have the lead in the wrong connector.

Display

There are 2 main display types. Analog and digital. The analog ones have a meter with a needle that looks like a car speedo. On the face are various scales that correspond to the measurement you are taking. The digital ones have an LCD screen that displays the numerical values. Analog meters do not have auto ranging so you will need to select the correct range. If you don't know the range, start at the highest and work your way down. Most digital meters have autoranging so they will select the correct range for you to display maximum number of digits behind the comma. My meters have 4–5 digits in total so the maximum “detail” is 4 digits after the comma.

Power

All my meters are powered by a 9V battery. It usually lasts for a couple of years, depending on how often you use the meter.

Portability

All my meters are battery powered and small enough to use in virtually any location. Some have stands so they can stay upright, other have hooks so you can hang them while measuring. One even has a magnet so I can stick it to a metal surface. There are desktop meters that meant to ve used in a workbench. They require mains power to work so they are not very portable

There are plenty of meters out there for every budget and application. If you want to buy one, spend some time comparing different models. For me a multimeter is a trusted companion I have around for many years (my oldest is 20 years old and still doing fine) so I want us to be a good match.

Hope this helps.
