Sphincters of any kind control the allowed movement of a substances from point A to point B. there are two sphincters in the gastroesophageal (cardiac) sphincterwhich controls the movement of food from the esphagus to the stomach and thepyloric sphincter which controls the movement of chyme from the stomach.
