Function of RER is protein synthesis
Function of SER is detoxification, biosynthesis of lipid, cholesterol, storage of calcium ion.
Explanation:
- Rough endoplasmic reticulum contain ribosome on their surface. therefore the surface of ER appeared as rough.
- we know that ribosome perform protein synthesis as this ER carry the ribosome, so function of RER is protein synthesis.
- Smooth endoplasmic reticulum lack ribosome so therefore it cannot perform protein synthesis.
- SER contain as enzymes that can make lipid soluble drug into water soluble, so that they can be easily expelled out of the body and this way they perform detoxification.
- The enzyme that synthesize the lipid component also present in SER that perform lipid biosynthesis.
- a smooth endoplasmic reticulum present in muscle is called sarcoplasmic reticulum that store calcium ions.
- calcium is require for muscle contraction.

1)The endoplasmic reticulum is one of the organelles that forms the endomembrane system.
2)It is further classified as rough endoplasmic reticulum and smooth endoplasmic reticulum.
3)The rough endoplasmic reticulum has a rough surface due to the presence of ribosomes and they are mainly involved in protein synthesis.
4)Smooth endoplasmic reticulum does not have ribosomes attached to their surfaces and hence have a smooth surface. It is mainly helps in the synthesis of lipids and steroids.
