Capillaries are thin walled blood vessels (thinnest of all: about one cell thick) present in membranous areas such as alveoli, villi etc. Their main function is to help transport materials to blood by diffusion.

For example: The oxygen we take in is transported into the blood and the CO2 in blood is given out by through the capillaries in alveoli. The ones in villi for transporting nutrients is also a good example.
