Auxins promote stem elongation, inhibit growth of lateral buds (maintains apical dominance). They are produced in the stem, buds, and root tips. Example: Indole Acetic Acid (IA). Auxin is a plant hormone produced in the stem tip that promotes cell elongation.

1. Auxin activates a membrane transport protein called ATPase and causes that protein to pump hydrogen ions (H+) into the cell wall.
2. As H+ concentration increases, the < pH of the cell wall decreases and the cell wall becomes acidic.
3. The acidic conditions in the cell wall cause loosening of the bonds that hold the wall together, for example by favoring the activity of enzymes that break bonds in the hemicellulases in the wall.
4. Once acidification loosens the cell wall, it’s easier for cells to expand.
5. Auxin also activates growth genes that are required for sustained cell elongation to occur
