What are the functions of carbohydrates

The following are the functions of carbohydrates....

i)Energy - When carbohydrates are digested. they are turned to glucose.Glucose is the main source of energy for our body. Though fats and protein also provide energy but carbohydrate is the main source of energy in our body.

ii)Brain function - While glucose obtained from carbohydrates is essential for our the functioning of our body it is essential for our brain also as our brain uses 20 % of the total energy.

iii)Decrease disease risk - Eating too many simple carbohydrates can result in negative health but some carbohydrates like fibres which are associated with low cholestrol levels is essential for controlling increase in cholestrol level in our body.

iv)Weight control - Eating complex carbohydrates keep you full for a long period of time as our body breaks them down slowly.This means that eating complex carbohydrates helps you eat less and control your weight.
