Cork Cambium forms in the outer cortex of a woody stem and produces cork and epidermal tissues. The cork helps to waterproof the stem and is worn off as the tree grows in thickness. The accumulation of the xylem forms the trees' rings and the cork has nothing to do with it. Some species of trees contain a very thick layer of cork most only a thin layer.
