On the basis of location, meristems are of three types, apical, intercalary and lateral.
- Apical: It is present at the apices of stem, root and their branches. Functions: It helps in growth in length and formation of primary tissues.
- Intercalary: It is found above orbelow stem nodes and leaf bases.
- lateral meristem: a meristem (as the cambium and cork cambium) that is arranged parallel to the sides of an organ and that is responsible for increase in diameter of the organ — compare apical meristem, intercalary meristem.
