Ethylene serves as a hormone in plants. It acts at trace levels throughout the life of the plant by stimulating or regulating the ripening of fruit, the opening of flowers, and the abscission (or shedding) of leaves.

ETHYLENE is a plant hormone and is widely used to ripen the fruits.
and its polymerized form polyethylene is widely used in plastic industry.
the plastic utensils are mostly manufactured by the usage of polyethylene.
and then it is also used in the rubber industry, and also used in detergents and many lubricants.

so these ways ethylene C2H4 functions mainly as a plant hormone responsible for the ripening of the fruits and also functions as a main part of the manufacturing of the plastic things from polyethylene,as a lubricant and an ingredient for the rubber, detergent manufacture.

hope this helps.
