The main purpose of the GATTwas substantial reduction of tariffs and other trade barriers and the elimination of preferences, on a reciprocal and mutually advantageous basis. Anotherpurpose of GATT was to reduce tariff. ... The high tariffs managed to cut down all the imports and exports between countries.
