As per the Municipal Act 2000 the Municipal Councils/Committee performs following duties:-
i. Preparation of plans for economic development and social justice;
ii. Performance of functions and implementation of the schemes, which may be entrusted to them, including the following:-
1 Urban Planning, including town planning.
2. Regulation of land – use and construction of Buildings
3. Public Health, Sanitation, Conservancy, and Solid Waste Management
4. Urban Forestry, Protection of Environment and promotion of ecological aspects
5. Safeguarding interests of weaker sections of the society
6. Slum improvement and up-gradation
7. Provisions of Urban amenities and facilities such as parks, playgrounds and gardens
8. Promotion of cultural, educational and aesthetic aspects
9. Burials and burial grounds, cremation and cremational grounds
10. Cattle ponds and prevention of cruelty to animals
11. Urban poverty alleviation
12. Vital Statistics including registration of Births, Deaths
13. Planning for economic and social development
14. Regulation of slaughter houses and tanneries
15. Regulation of amenities including street lighting, parking lots, bus stops, and public convenience
16. Implementation of Food Adulteration Act
