The main function of SER is synthesis of lipids and fats which are used in synthesis of membranes.
It also synthesis hormones like oestrogen and testosterone.
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum helps in detoxification process of various drugs in liver of vertebrates.

specialised cells can have a lot of smooth endoplasmic reticulum and in this is the smooth endoplasmic reticulum has many functions .in it is synthesizes lipids ,phospholipids and steroids .cells which is secret these products such as those in the testes, ovaries & sebaceous glands have an abundance of smooth endoplasmic reticulum
