First, check the mail i.d.  If you find anything suspicious like, they will not have genuine email id, or they will have some numbers before “.com”. Then, beware.  Companies, who are good, will have their own servers or they will have their own domain

Second, do not open any attachments from an unknown email id.  It could be a virus or a spam message.  If it has links also do not open those links.

Third, look for the grammatical error in the body of the letter.  People who are sending spam mails will not have patience to sit and type out a neat mail

Fourth, if any mail is asking for your personal information like your bank account number, pin etc., immediately delete it. If there are messages that say you have some dollars etc., don’t open such messages and immediately delete it.

Fifth, look at the way they address you, if it is from a genuine organisation, they would address you by your name, for example, “Dear Ms./Mr-----.  If it is from spam, they would address you as "Dear customer", etc.

Before Accessing unknown emails, a user should be ware of a few potential threats:

1. Virus: Sending virus though unknown email ids is a staple method of spreading malware and virus in computers around the world. If you don't know the email and they ask you to 'download' something, do not!

2. Catfishing: Many people try to send a virus or extract information by using an email id similar to your friends, family or business associate. In general use many people ignore the obvious give-aways and instead pass on sensitive information

3. Never Share Bank Details: Even if you know the email address, never ever share passwords, bank info or credit card details over an email

4. I love you emails: Another known scam to get information of a user is when they get a 'random' email from an 'attractive girl' on the internet who wants to become 'friends' stay away

5. Spelling mistakes, graphics etc: If you are getting an email from [email protected], or something on those lines, be very aware. Nigerian scams try to look creditable but with a quick internet search, you can find out if an email id really is owned by a company or a fraud
