What are the harmful effects of photochemical smog and how can they be controlled ?
Answers
Photochemical smog is a type of air pollution that is a result of the interaction of sunlight with certain chemicals in the atmosphere. One of the primary components of photochemical smog is ozone. It also contains sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, PAN, acrolein, formaldehyde (volatile organic compounds).
Ozone on the ground is hazardous to human health. Ground-level ozone is formed when vehicle emissions containing nitrogen oxides (primarily from vehicle exhaust) and volatile organic compounds (formed from paints, solvents, and fuel evaporation) interact in the presence of sunlight.
Harmful effects of petrochemical smog
They cause corrosion of metals, stones, rubber, and painted surfaces.
The air pollutants from smog cause serious health problems to senior citizens, children and people with heart and lung problems leading to emphysema, bronchitis, asthma. It also causes pneumonia, inflammation of pulmonary tissues, fatigue, heart palpitations, and even premature aging of the lungs and death.
Control measures
Photochemical smog results from the burring of fossil fuels and automobile fuels that emit NO2 and hydrocarbons, which in turn form ozone, PAN, and other chemicals. The use of catalytic converters in automobiles is recommended to prevent the release of NO2 and hydrocarbons into the atmosphere.
Switching over to other types of fuels, desulfurization of fuel gases from coal-fired power plants, expansion of public rail transport.
Plantation of plants such as Pinus, Juniparur, Quercus, Pyrus, and Vitis is also advised as these plants have the capability to metabolize NO2.
Low emission application of fertilizer in agriculture are some of the steps which have drastically reduced the level of photochemical smog.
