Lead and Mercury are two of the most prominent. Both of these are hazardous inside of the body by creating problems in the nervous system. Mercury was famous for creating the "madhatters" in England where they would cure felt hats using Mercury salts.
Lead is prominent in the solder used to connect electrical "joints" on electrical boards. Some alternatives have been made, but they don't stand up as good as Lead. I'm not sure what parts have Mercury in them. The new Lead and Mercury less standard is known as ROHS. If you see a board labeled ROHS, then it is Lead and Mercury free.
