There are number of hindrances and obstacles in the smooth functioning of Democracy in India. Some of them are as under :

1.  Poverty : More than 30% of Indian population live below the poverty line. They are more concerned for food and shelter than for right to vote.

2. Illiteracy : Illiterate people are ignorant about the democratic institutions and principles and could not use their democratic rights in a proper way.

3. Hyper-Nationalism : Hyper- Nationalism is now-days increasing in India which suppresses the freedom of speech and expression. The descent especially against the ruling regimes is being suppressed.

4.  Casteism and Communalism : These are also hindrances in the smooth functioning of democracy.

5. Corruption : Corruption in India is highly increasing which renders the democratic principles and institutions functionless.

6.  Regionalism and regional disparity is another hindrance.

7.  Besides Criminal politics and political violence are other hindrances in the smooth functioning of democracy in India
