Grey matter is a major component of the central nervous system. 1. Gray matter is made of numerous cell bodies of the neurons and relatively few myelinated axons. As the cell bodies are without myelin sheath, they do not possess the white colour.

2. White matter is composed mainly of long-range myelinated axons. Its white colour of the white matter is attributed to the white-coloured myelin sheath that covers the long axons.

  • While white matter is located deep in the brain, gray matter is mostly found on the brain's surface, cortex.
  • In the spinal cord, they are in opposite arrangement with grey matter inside and white matter outside.
