The epics of every culture began as usually small tribal battles that were later expanded and exaggerated. The storyteller was the main entertainer in all ancient societies and had to elaborate on the tales to entertain his listeners. So the kings grew more magnificent, the princesses more beautiful, the enemies more ferocious and the armies more invincible over the ages. All myths are therefore full of exaggeration but are an important part of the cultural record of every culture.
