There are some agencies both at the national and the state level to collect, process and tabulate statistical data.

The notable sources are:

(a) The census of India provides most complete and demographic record of population. The census is being regularly conducted every 10 years since 1881. The census officials collect information on various aspects of population such as size, density,sex ratio,literacy etc. The data collected is useful in determining tendencies in density of population, literacy rates, sex ratio etc. Official of the Registrar General and Census Commission, India, under Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt. of India conducts the census. The census data is interpreted and analysed and analysed to understand many economic and social issues in India. Last census of India was done in 2011. It was the 7th after independence in 1947.

(d) National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) was established by the Government of India to conduct nationwide survey on socio-economic issues. It was first setup in 1950 and then reorganised in 1970. Structure of NSSO has four divisions:

  1. Survey design and research division (SDRD)
  2. Field operations division (FOD)
  3. Data processing divisions (DPD)
  4. Co-ordination and publications division (CPD)

The data collected by NSSO are released through reports and its quarterly journal 'Sarvekshana' NSSO provides periodic estimates of literacy, school enrolment, unemployment etc.

NSSO conduct 3 types of surveys:

  • Socio-economic survey
  • Annual survey of industries
  • Agriculture surveys

NNSO conducts the following functions:

  • Carries out socio-economic surveys
  • Collection data on price level in rural and urban sector
  • Follows up surveys of economic census
  • Designs research activities
