The internal storage reserves of plants and animals are starch and glycogen respectively.

The plants synthesize food or starch by utilizing "carbon dioxide" and water in the "presence of sunlight" through a process called photosynthesis. This starch is stored as a reserve material in the animals.

Similarly, the excess sugar molecules are converted into glycogen and are stored as reserve materials in the muscles of animals. At times of requirement, this glycogen is converted into sugar and is utilized.
