what are the jet streams and how they affect the climate of India ?
Answers
Jet streams are the air currents found in the highest part of the atmosphere. The jet streams impact the onset of monsoon which depends upon the upper air circulation dominated by SubTropical Jet Streams (STJ). The south west monsoon in India is directly related to the tropical easterly stream.
The easterly jet streams cause tropical depressions during the monsoon as well as October-November months. Jet streams are fast flowing winds blowing in a narrow zone in the upper atmosphere. In winter, the subtropical westernly jet streams bring rain to the western part of India.

Answer:
Jet streams are the narrow belt of high altitude westerly winds in the troposphere. They blow at a fast speed of about 110km/h in summers to about 184km/h in winters.
The westerly jet streams are responsible for bringing western cyclonic disturbances to north west India resulting in rainfall in winters.
The easterly jet stream blowing over north India result in the creation of tropic depressions. The latter play a significant role in the distribution of rainfall in the country.
