The term sinking refers to a sinking ship. A vessel which loses buoyancy and submerges under the surface of the water is termed as a ship which has sunk. It is not necessary that the ship disappears entirely beneath the surface. This is because a vessel may sink in shallow waters and still have its superstructure exposed.
