What is limiting friction?

\implies Limiting friction is the maximum value of static friction which comes which works when a body slides over the surface of other body.

Laws of limiting friction :-

  • The direction of the force of limiting friction is always opposite to the direction in which one is at the verge of moving over the other.

  • The magnitude of the force limiting friction (F) between any two bodies in contact is directly proportional to the normal reaction (R)

  • The force of limiting friction is independent of the apparent area of contact, so long as normal reaction between the two bodies in contact remains the same.

  • The force of limiting friction between any two bodies in contact depends on the nature of material of the surface in contact.

The laws of limiting friction are given below.

  • The limiting friction depends upon the roughness or smoothness of the surfaces in contact and acts tangentially to the interface between them.

  • The direction of force of friction is always in a way that it opposes the direction of the motion.

  • It is independent of area and shape of the surface in contact as long as the normal reaction remains the same.

  • It is directly proportional to the normal reaction between the two surfaces in contact.
