• There are three distinct levels of government in the U.S.: the federal government, state governments and local governments.

• National Government – The federal government (our national government) supports our national defence, conducts external relations in our country and tackles a range of domestic or global problems that neither state nor local governments can cope effectively with such as air pollution, intergovernmental trade and pirates.
• State Government – The U.S. consists of 50 states, the Columbia district, Puerto Rico, Guam, U.S. Samoa and the Virgin Islands territories. In 1978 the Northern Mariana Islands Self-Governing Commonwealth concluded a constitutional union agreement with the United States of America, which was granted U.S. citizenship to the people of that commonwealth in 1986.
• Local Governments – Local governments range from populations of fewer than ten topopulations of more than ten million. They have much of the same services, including teachers, police, firefighters, leisure centers, libraries, and local public works such as roads and sewage treatment stations.
