Adolf Baeyer proposed a theory to explain the relative stability of cycloalkanes. The limitations of Baeyer's theory are

1. The effect of angle strain in larger ring systems was not explained by Baeyer.

2. Baeyer proposed that the cyclopentane should be much stable than cyclohexane but cyclohexane has zero angle strain.

3. According to the baeyer, larger ring systems are not planar but puckered to minimize angle strain.

4. Larger ring systems are not possible but they exist and highly stable.
