Zain ul Abidin was the ruler of Kashmir from 1420 to 1470. During his fifty year rule, he followed a very liberal religious policy, promoted learning and was a great patron of art and architecture. Among his achievements were
1. He gave religious freedom to his Hindu subjects and abolished the Jizya tax.
2. He encouraged the development of several crafts like shawl making, gold jewelry making, musket making, paper making and book binding.
3. He dug canals to provide irrigation facilities and gave grants of grain and fodder to the people during natural calamities like famine.
4. He lessened the burden of taxation of the people and fixed prices of essential commodities.
5. He gave patronage to authors and poets of various languages like Persian, Kashmiri, Sanskrit and Tibetan.
