The major causes of French Revolution are as follows:

1) Despotic rule of Louis 16:-

Louis 16 drained the financial resources of France in wars. He also kept on increasing taxes to meet his extravagant lifestyle. This also resulted in increase in price of essential goods.

2) Division of French Society:-

French Society was divided into first, second and third estate. Only poor people of third estate had to pay tax. This resulted in growing dissatisfaction among people resulting in revolt.

3) Inspiration of philosophers:-

Philosophers like Rousseau, Locke and Montesquieu spoke about equality, liberty and freedom and inspired people to revolt.

4) Growing importance of middle class.
