in an secular state,
all religions are treated equally
the state cannot pass any official religion 
no one can force any one to join their religion
religion remains as an personal matter and government should not and cannot interfere
the in minority should be treated equally with religion in majority
the citizen can follow any religion according to his wish

India is a secular country. There are various characteristics which make it secular. Some of them are :
a) No religion is recognized as the official religion of India. India is having various religions such as Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist, Christian etc.
b) All the citizens of India are given the freedom to profess and practice any religion in India.
c) There can be no discrimination on the basis of religion
