Akbar followed a liberal religious policy. He realised that in order to rule over the diverse population, of one nation , it was important to follow a policy of tolerance where everyone could enjoy equal status irrespective of their religion.
He did not allow the ulemas to dictate state policies and ensured that the Mughal state was a secular one.
Akbar is said to have promulgated the idea of a new religion called Din - i - Ilahi, or Divine Faith . He adopted the main features from all the religions and founded a new religion.
