Metaphysical poetry had what is known as ‘conceits’, in them. It laid emphasis on the spoken, rather than the lyrical verse.
It was the English poet, playwright and literary critic, Samuel Johnson who came up with the term ‘Metaphysical poets’, sometime in the 17th century. Such poets used terms (known as conceits), describing situations which either did not exist or rarely existed, to suit their poetic plots.
Metaphysical poetry was created by the English cleric and poet, belonging to the Church of England, John Donne.
