Some of the main features of urbanisation are ...

• The growth rate of population in urban areas was more than 38% during the decade 1961-1971. The growth rate then reached 46% in the decade 1971–1981. In the decade 1981–1991, this growth rate decreased slightly and it remained at 36% only.
• There are many regional disparities in urbanization. Variations in the level of urbanization are found in different states. This indicates its diversity in a large country like India.
• A feature of urbanization has been that there has been a large increase in the population of the city in large metropolises in India, while the growth rate has been slightly lower in relatively small states.
