The main features to be considered by the management while planning are :  

 

PLANNING FOCUSES ON ACHIEVING OBJECTIVES :  

Planning determines ‘where we are’ and  ‘where we want to go’ for the attainment of the objectives. If there is no planning one will not be able to know what is to be achieved and what is to be done to achieve it.  Planning aims to choose among the available alternative so that the best courses may be adopted to achieve the objectives in an excellent manner.

 

PLANNING IS A PRIMARY FUNCTION OF MANAGEMENT :  

Planning function of management precedes the other functions of Management as a performance of the other function depend on the performance of the planning function. It is also known as primacy of planning.

 

PLANNING IS PERVASIVE :  

The planning function is an integral part of all the organisations, small or big and all the levels in the organisation, be it top, middle or lower. Managers at the top level frame corporate plans, managers at middle level frame business plans and the lower management frames functional plans.

 

PLANNING IS CONTINUOUS :  

Plans are prepared for a specific period of time and at the end of that period there is need for a new plan to be drawn on the basis of new requirements. Hence, planning is a never ending activity and also continuous process.

Planning should be done so as to prepare the organisation to deal with the future events. Managers must be able to anticipate the probable situations and plan so as to cope with them in a better manner.
