the main reasons for the clearing of forests were

  1. the new demand for railways
  2. the british needed teak and oak for ship building
  3. the british encouraged growth of commercial crops like sugar and wheat.
  4. tea plantations,coffee plantations and rubber plantation
  5. british thought forests were unproductive and could be converted to agricultural land for revenue and crops.
