Stages

Giuseppe Mazzini attempted to create a sequential plan for an Italian republic that would be unitary.

The sequence is as follows

  • Due to the failure of previous revolutions, Sardinia-Piedmont, under the leadership of King Victor Emmanuel II, assumed responsibility for bringing the Italian nations together militarily.
  • The drive to unite the Italian regions was led by Chief Minister Cavour, who was neither revolutionary nor democratic.
  • Sardinia Piedmont was able to overcome Austrian soldiers thanks to the alliance Cavour arranged.
  • Along with the regular troops, a sizable army under the command of Giuseppe Garibaldi joined the fight.
  • They marched to southern Italy in an effort to expel the Spanish occupants, and they were successful in gaining the support of the Italian peasants.
  • The primary issues were the following
  • There were seven states in Italy. Only one of those was controlled by an Italian princely family, Sardinia Piedmont.
  • The northern regions were governed by the Austrian Habsburgs, the central regions by the Pope, and the southern regions by the Spanish Bourbon kings.
  • Even the Italian language had not developed a single standard form; instead, different regional varieties predominated.
