Sunlight is essential for photosynthesis to occur in plants as plants have photosynthetic pigment chlorophyll which absorbs sunlight and some accessory pigments which helps to absorb whole range of visible spectrum and makes the process more efficient. Without the sunlight plant would not perform photosynthesis which can be studied experimentally by taking two potted plants and providing different conditions to each. One kept in dark and one in sunlight for few days. Then iodine test can be done to check the formation of starch i.e. the product of photosynthesis as we know. The blue black colour confirms the formation of photosynthates in the plant which was kept in light.
