Petroleum (oil, gas) is stored up in sedimentary rocks (mainly). Thus they hold the natural resources we need, but we can also learn from them so we can find more. Coal is a rock, which we can use as an energy source; we shouldn’t do that anymore, though.Rocks tell us about past climate, past environments, past continents and tectonic events, and about the formation of our planet and solar system. In igneous rocks such as granite and diorite are minerals such as zircon or monazite which have Uranium, or Potassium bearing feldspars which we can use to radiometrically date those rocks to understand how these rocks formed in the past. In sedimentary rocks sometime we can find muscovites and date those as well. There are a suite of minerals which can be dated, and as we know what temperatures they cool at and lock in the necessary Uranium, we can understand how quickly that rock mass became exposed.Rocks contain ore minerals from which we can extract precious metals such as gold, silver, and platinum as well as industrial metals such as cobalt, nickel, iron, zinc, and aluminium and many others. We also extract silicon from the broken down remains of rocks in the form of sand and make computer chips from it.From rocks we can extract minerals such as kyanite and muscovite which can be used in ceramics or for heat shielding.Rocks sometimes contain rare gemstones which we can extract, cut, and polish so we can overcharge people who prefer to cling to an ideal.Without rocks we wouldn’t have a planet to live on, nor would scenery be particularly interesting. We wouldn’t have beaches due to having no sand; plants could absorb nutrients from the soil because there would be little to no soil. Without rocks Paleo-Neolithic man would have had to find another material to build their weapons and tool out of and another material within which they might live. Trees most likely, though they would probably have a hard time growing with a lack of soil.
Also, you can throw rocks at things, like pigeons, of skip them off water. Throw them at trains (the railroad engineers probably won’t like that), you can tumble them in a rock tumbler, make counter tops, use gravel in roads and concrete, build buildings and facades from limestone and sandstone. The list goes on and on.
