Alum are double salts of the form A2SO4.B2(SO4)3.24H2O.
Eg: K2SO4.Al2(SO4)3.24H2O
Na2SO4.Al2(SO4)3.24H2O
Alum in water gives Al+3 ions which bring about sedimentation of negatively charged collidal particles in water.
