The major division of kingdom plantae :
Explanation :
In 1883, Eichler divided the kingdom Plantae into two subkingdoms namely,
(a) Cryptogamae
(b) Phanerogamae
The plants without well differentiated reproductive ches are called 'Cryptogamae'. The plants with well differentiated reproductive tissues that ultimately make seeds are called 'Phanerogams'.
The sub-kingdom cryptogamae have the following characters:
(i) It has seedless plants.
(ii) The reproductive organs are inconspicuous.
(iii) The flowers and seeds are absent.
(iv) The embryo is naked.
(v) It includes lower plants which have naked embryos called spores.
The sub - kingdom Cryptogamae is classified into three groups namely,
(i) Division Thallophyta
(ii) Division Bryophyta
(iii) Division Pteridophyta
The sub - kingdom Phanerogamae has the following characters:
(i) It contains seed bearing plants.
(ii) It has well differentiated reproductive organs
(iii) Embryo is present inside the seed along with the stored food.
(iv) It includes higher pla seeds. ludes higher plants which bears flowers and seeds.
The Phanerogams are further classified into two groups based on whether the seeds are naked or enclosed in fruits namely,
(i). Angiospermae
(ii). Gymnospermae
Based on the number of cotyledons present the angiosperm are further classified into two types namely, dicots and monocots.
