The plateau has broad and shallow valleys and rounded hills and consists of two broad divisions, the Central Highlands and the Deccan Plateau. The Central Highlands are bounded by the Vindhyan range on the south and the Aravalis on the northwest.

The Vindhyan range is bounded by the Central Highlands on the south and the Aravalis on the northwest. It extends from Jobat (Gujarat) and Chittorgarh (Rajasthan) to Sasaram in Bihar for about 1050 km with general elevation between 450 to 600 metres.
