First reason is Industrialisation, which is increasing day by day. Due to this a lot of harmful wastes are thrown in rivers without treatment.
Second is large population. People throw a lot of wastes and they even make their cattle bath in these rivers.
Third is increasing needs of people whose standards of living are increasing.
Fourth is bad management of rivers.
Fifth is not proper implementation of laws which are there to protect them.
