The major reasons for less effectiveness of poverty alleviation programs are:
- India has the fifth largest economy in terms of GDP still 21% of India's population lives below the poverty line.
- Poverty in India is caused by many reasons like illiteracy, inequality, unequal distribution of wealth, etc. There are many programs introduced by the government of India to eradicate the problem of poverty, some of them are- Prime Minister Rozgar Yojana, Antyodaya Anna Yojana, Employment Generation Program, etc.
- These poverty eradicating programs were less effective due to these reasons;
- The government is unable to identify the number of poor people who need the benefit of the program and the people who don't need these programs benefit from them.
- The population in India is immense which makes it very difficult for the government to target needy people.
- Corruption at the government level makes the implementation of these programs difficult.
Poverty can be reduced in India by taking equal responsibility by the people and government together.
