First , let's define what is a transverse wave :
Transverse waves (also known as transverse pulses) propagate through any medium due to vibration of the medium particles perpendicular to the direction of motion of the wave.
So , we can imagine each of the particles of the medium to be involved in oscillatory motion perpendicular to the direction of motion of the wave.
Mean position in a transverse wave refers to the mean position of the oscillatory trajectory of the medium particles.
Similarly, extreme positions in a transverse wave refers to the extreme position of the oscillatory trajectory of the medium particle.
