Stand in front of a window with a view. Hold the lens in between the window and a piece if paper. Change the distance between the lens and the paper sheet until the view is in focus. This distance is the approximate focal length of a lens, due to the view being on infinity.
This only works with lenses with a positive optical power, ofcourse.
