Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA):
Year:1988-89
Place:MP, Gujarat and Maharashtra
Leader: Medha Patkar
Purpose: To save Narmada and oppose the construction of multi national dams
Summary: An ambitious development project was launched in the Narmada valley of central India which consisted of 30 big, 135 medium and around 3000 small dams to be constructed on river narmada and its tributaries across the state of MP, Gujarat and Maharashtra.
Sardar Sarovar project(Gujarat) and Narmada Sagar project (MP) were two of the biggest multi purpose dam planned under the project. The project would benefit the areas in terms of availability of water for drinking and irrigation, generation of electricity and increase in agriculture production and provide effective flood and drought control measures. NBA, a movement to save NARMADA, opposed the construction of these dams because, in the process of construction of the dam a large number of villages were expected to get submerged. The project required relocation of around 2.5 lakh people
The NBA raised issues of the nature of ongoing development projects efficacy of model of development that the country followed and what constituted public interest in a democracy.
It demanded that there should be a cost - benefits analysis of the major development projects in the country. The social costs of forced resettlement of project affected people, a serious loss of their means of livelihood & culture , and depletion of ecological resources should be a part of that analysis
The movement demanded proper rehabilitation of people directly and indirectly affected by the project
The NBA insisted that local communities must have a say in the decision making process and should get effective control over natural resources like water land and forest
The movement also asked why in a democracy should some people be made to sacrifice for benefiting others. All these considerations led the NBA to completely oppose the construction of dam
