Question

What are the measures taken to conserve soil?

ANSWER-

Here are some measures taken to conserve soil :

1. Windbreaks : Windbreaks are barriers used to reduce and redirect wind. As wind blows against a windbreak, air pressure builds up on the windward side, thus decreasing the leeward side .

2. Salinity management : Salinity of soil can be managed by controlling the irrigation water to leach the soil, that will be drained and discharged through an appropriate drainage system.

3. Constructing Dams : They reduce the water flow by storing runoff. They trap the sediments and block active gullies and divert the water flows to a stable area.

Measure to Conserve Soil:

1) Terrace Farming:

On hilly slopes, terrace acts as bunds and prevent the soil from being washed away by running water.  This technique has been succesfully used in Japan and USA.

2) Shelter belts:

Farmers plant trees in several rows to check wind erosion. These rows or belts are called Shelter belts. They are also known as wind breaks.

3) Plugging gullies:

The gullies made in the soil due to past sheet, rill and gully erosion are plugged with deposition of silt during heavy rains and by humans.

4) Strip cropping:

Crops are grown in alternate strips of land to check the impact of the wind.  This method is known as Strip Cropping. It is similar to the shelter break technique.

hope this helps,
