Hello Vishu(a.k.a Science Lover),

The medicinal uses of microorganisms are as follows:

  1. They help in the production of antibiotics. Any chemical substance produced from a living organism, which stops the growth of any harmful bacterium is called an antibiotic. Some examples include:
  • Streptomycin : from Streptomyces griseus
  • Penicillin : from Penicillium notatum (fungi) or Penicillium chrysogenum (bacteria)
  • Erythromycin: from Streptomyces erythreus

     2. It helps in the production of serum, which is a clear yellowish fluid obtained after the separation of plasma of blood from its solid components. A small amount of toxins is inserted into the body of an animal, which produces antitoxins against it. The blood of the animal is taken out, separated into plasma and injected into the blood of the patient.

    3. Certain microorganisms such as bacteria help in the synthesis of Vitamin A and Vitamin D
